A comprehensive search and recovery mission is currently ongoing in the Caribbean waters for a pair of missing sailing vessels carrying relief goods journeying from Mexico to the island of Cuba.

Military Search Missions Initiated

Authorities in Mexico has deployed naval teams and reconnaissance aircraft to search for the two vessels, which were had on board at least nine total crew members, according to a military release.

The boats had been expected to arrive in Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their docking, the statement clarified.

Background of Relief to Cuba

The island nation has leaned on Mexico's over recent weeks, as the island grapples with multiple power outages across the country.

"Both crews and captains are experienced sailors, and the two ships are fitted with proper navigational gear and communication devices," a spokesperson for the convoy commented.

The nine crew members are citizens of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexican authorities said it has established contact with rescue coordination centers from each country along with their consular staff.

"We are collaborating completely with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the crews' ability to safely arrive in Havana," the spokesperson added.

Previous Relief Delivery

Just days before, the Cuban government publicly celebrated and greeted with fanfare a different ship that had carried 14 tonnes of donated goods to the nation.

That vessel, called "a modern Granma" following the name of the boat in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to start the revolution in the 1950s, carried solar panels, medicines, formula milk, bikes and food.

Wider Political Climate

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded initiatives to bring humanitarian aid to Cuba since January, when a oil sanctions on the country came into effect.

The United Nations have since raised alarms about "dire" supply shortages, with in excess of 50k surgical procedures cancelled in Cuba amid energy rationing.

Political tensions have intensified in recent months, with statements from various leaders emphasizing the complex nature of diplomatic ties.

Responding to previous statements, a prominent official from Cuba stated firmly that "the socialist system of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Reports suggest that initial phases of negotiations had begun, although their present status remains not publicly known.

The naval forces affirmed it was dedicated to using the full extent of its capabilities at its reach to locate the boats and guarantee the safety of the crews.

At this time, there has been no official comment on the disappeared vessels by the government in Havana.
