A Pig's Tale: Pig Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Mayor.

Although not quite at the identical stature as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.

Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.

“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued since the commencement of a second term in office.

“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”

The event, either celebrating or rejecting the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to emulate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.

The pig, contributed by a local firefighter, was given its name from the current slang trend of young people yelling “6-7” – inspired by a musical verse – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently declared “6-7” its top term for the year.

A Future Secured

Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the ceremony's official statement.

“The annual pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.

“It represents the character of Miami: joyful, varied, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Each year, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way distinctively Miamian.”

Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they toasted the swine's new lease on life.
