Accused Stalker Asked: 'But What If I Could Be Madeleine?'
A female indicted with pursuing Kate McCann reportedly left her a recorded message which asked: "imagine I am Madeleine?"
The defendant, 24, who a jury heard has repeatedly claimed she was the disappeared Madeleine McCann, and her co-defendant are standing trial indicted with stalking Kate and Gerry McCann between June 2022 and February the current year.
On Monday, Leicester Crown Court was told phone records and information recovered from phones logged Ms Wandelt consistently asking Madeleine's mother for a biological test over that period.
Madeleine's vanishing in 2007 - when she was three years old during a vacation in Portugal - is considered the most publicized missing child cases and is still open.
'I Do Not Need Money'
One phone message, presented in court, recorded Ms Wandelt stating: "I understand I'm fat and plain like Madeleine was, but I feel what I know."
While a separate message of Ms Wandelt's monologues with Mrs McCann's answerphone stated: "What if there is a small chance that I'm her? Then what? Isn't that significant for you?"
"I do not need money, I have a living here in Poland, I simply desire to discover," she added.
The panel was advised that by means of electronic messages, mobile messages and communications, Ms Wandelt asked for a biological test, transmitted childhood photos to her phone in a attempt to display a resemblance to Mrs McCann's missing daughter, and stated to have "memories" from a early life with the McCanns.
Robert Jones, an intelligence analyst with Leicestershire Police who collated the data, told the court there "seemed to lack any replies" from Mrs McCann.
Ms Wandelt also reached out to acquaintances of the McCanns, as per the phone records.
On October 9th, 2024, Mr McCann picked up a phone call from Ms Wandelt to his wife's phone, declaring she had "incorrect contact information."
During that incident Ms Wandelt left a message on Mrs McCann's answerphone saying "I will continue and I intend to demonstrate my claim."
The court heard Mrs Spragg struck up a relationship through digital means with Ms Wandelt before joining her on a visit to the McCanns' property in Leicestershire in that winter.
Phone records demonstrated Mrs Spragg had contacted using WhatsApp to Mrs McCann to say the media had characterized Ms Wandelt as "mentally unstable" but that she deserved to be taken seriously in the period before the trip to Rothley, the county, in that winter.
The court was told message exchanges between the two individuals, in November 2024, planning endeavoring to acquire Mrs McCann's biological evidence from her garbage or from cutlery at a dining venue.
"We have to take action," the co-defendant informed Ms Wandelt.
On the night of the appearance to their house, Mrs Spragg sent a communication which said: "We are positioned near the McCanns' residence with our headlights off like investigators. I desired to accomplish this with another person I never thought I would be doing that with the McCanns."
The trial ongoing.
