An Tale of Unexpected Generosity: When a Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dormitory Ground
During the year 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for an admissions interview for medical school. I assumed I would book accommodation when I arrived, however when I arrived, a large conference was in town and all the backpackers hostels and cheap hotels were completely sold out.
Hailing from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind the possibility of spend the night at the terminal – but quickly found Canberra airport, not like the one back home, closes 24 hours. Unsure of quite what to do and growing worried, I boarded public transport and began walking towards a gaming venue, reasoning it was a place to spend the night in an establishment that was open all night. That wouldn’t put me in the best shape for nailing a crucial interview the next morning, however, being a cash-strapped student, I couldn’t afford.
The world needs more folks with such compassion.
Apparently, I appeared lost because a young woman spotted me walking aimlessly through the city and inquired whether I needed help. I recounted my situation and immediately she suggested I was welcome to sleep on the floor in her student dorm at the Australian National University – which was perfect, given that my my interview would take place the next morning. She even offered a meal: a leftover sandwiches she had taken home her part-time job. I was able to use a hot shower and a secure location and secure to spend the night.
With hindsight, it’s clear to me the enormous leap of faith she took being a woman letting a guy she’d just met sleep on her floor. At that time I operated under a bubble of male privilege and did not consider to such safety concerns. As a dad now, it astounds me she offered that help – yet incredibly thankful.
I never did go to that university, and I lost touch with her again, but I’ve never forgotten that incredible gesture of generosity. My sincere desire is that life has returned her act of kindness abundantly. We could all use more individuals like that woman.
