The Princess of Wales is hosting her customary festive musical service at the historic Abbey, with guests including royals, celebrities and local heroes who have helped their communities.

The large audience will listen to a blend of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from performers including Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Centred Around Love and Generosity

The focus of the service, held in the glowing Westminster Abbey on the afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

In the audience are Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose daughter died of a brain tumour, and who founded an organisation, a support fund, to help households where there is a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.

"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often discreetly and without words, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an extraordinary difference to the lives of others," wrote Catherine in a note prior to the carol service.

A Gradual Return

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own measured re-emergence to public life after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, in November making her first public speech for two years, in which she reflected on recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".

Performance and Potential

Those coming to the Abbey can listen to young musicians backed by the charitable trust Future Talent, set up with the help of the former royal to increase availability of instrumental training.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who is a trumpet player and is from Wales, has been helped by the charity, with grants helping towards equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "amazing" to be taking part in the concert.

"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," Carys said. She is now a student at the prestigious music academy, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to develop their musical skills.

Generations Gathering

Her younger sibling Eliza, aged 11, who performs on the brass instrument, will likewise attend the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.

Within the audience will be individuals spanning multiple eras.

That will encompass nine-year-old Saphia Turner, honouree of a young hero award, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to raise money for local food charities.

Festive Decor and Performances

The Abbey has been decorated with specially made wreaths, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.

Taking to the stage will be Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a nautical singing ensemble, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "the perfect culmination."

This annual carol service will be televised and shown on a major network on Christmas Eve.
