The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
