The Chainsaw Man Film Dominates American Box Office in Debut Weekend
Has Sony repeated their success? In the wake of the triumph of the hit anime Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which brought in in excess of $600 million at the box office, the latest Chainsaw Man film has reached beyond the hundred-million-dollar mark globally, hitting a global total of over $108 million in its opening frame. This movie surpassed the thriller Black Phone 2 ($12.9 million) in its second week in cinemas, as well as the music documentary Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere with the talented Jeremy Allen White ($9 million).
Impressive Domestic and Worldwide Earnings
Directed by Tatsuya Yoshihara, the film is a direct continuation of the initial season of Chainsaw Man. It grossed $18.2 million domestically after a robust $5.2 million Saturday box office and four-point-five-million-dollar Sunday performance. Internationally, the produced by MAPPA film grossed nearly $15 million across 46 global regions, pushing its worldwide total to $60.4M through Sony distribution ($43.1 million international, $18.2 million in the U.S.). Sony has yet to announce its official box office total.
Parallels to Previous Successful Anime Films
Specialist agency an industry expert noted in prior discussions, contrasting the film’s projected performance to the popular film Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which grossed $34M in the North America in 2022 and opened to a nearly identical eighteen million dollars stateside. Reze Arc’s opening frame matches that marker, while its hundred-and-eight-million-dollar worldwide total is now positioned slightly below that movie's over $166 million final run. While it is improbable this Chainsaw Man film will achieve the earnings seen by mega hit the enormous hit Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, it remains a major victory for the distributor.
Promotional Campaigns Boost Box Office Dominance
Along with its affiliate Crunchyroll have successfully utilized audience interaction to boost their dominance at the animated movie market. This film's marketing campaign began at Anime Expo Los Angeles in the month of July with a MAPPA panel, exclusive activations, and photo opportunities with Pochita, followed by a notable appearance at NYCC featuring never-before-seen content, audience giveaways, and additional MAPPA panels. Moreover, organizers held an exclusive fan screening for general audiences and popular figures too after the final day of the gathering.
