For much of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned in a realm of memories forged from the past of Vecna. The search for freedom in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to witness again a traumatic incident from Henry's early years—a discovery that potentially carries the means to overcome him permanently.

The Discovery in the Tunnel

Upon meeting Max in the world known as Camazotz, Max reveals she is hiding out in a chamber that Henry avoids at all costs. A clever observation a viewing device taken from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the true terror lies outside of the cave. By aligning her view with the shape, she and Max tumble into a deep mine shaft.

In this place, they observe a Henry as a boy find an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly wonders aloud. It was a factor, but the event went deeper than a fight for life.

Like many elements in volume 2, the significance of the mine shaft incident is detailed in the theatrical production The First Shadow.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Secret Science

*The First Shadow* opens with the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension known as the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who came back in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.

This man's son, the future Dr. Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in Nevada. However, a treacherous employee took experimental components to give to the Communist spies, who were keen to start their parallel research. This spy in the tunnel is the one who stole the materials.

The Briefcase's Contents

Considering what is understood of the doctor's experiments, the case most likely held vials of the altered blood. In the scene, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon handling the contents, which triggered the origin of his telekinetic gifts—powers he would genetically impart to the kids in Hawkins Lab.

A second theory, the container could have held strange particles that later made its way to the Hawkins lab, where it helps stabilize the mirror dimension. The prequel shows that the boy was transported in the Abyss, coming back hours later with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he battles the whispers of a malevolent force, reminiscent of how Will Byers was influenced by the shadow monster in an earlier season.

The Power of Fear

Henry's enduring terror associated with the mine shows how profoundly traumatic the encounter was for him. While he orchestrates the collective consciousness and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him lingers. The villain weaponizes terror, and the show is setting up a climactic battle between the monster and Will, who has deliberately faced his personal demons to become stronger.

This journey has effectively disarmed Vecna. Furthermore, Will now understands what the monster's own weakness, potentially giving him a key upper hand in the endgame conflict to come.
