The Young Spinner Earns Unexpected Selection in England's Test Series Team
England have chosen a twelve-player selection just 48 hours ahead of the opening Test match, with the 22-year-old spinner earning a unexpected spot.
Bashir's inclusion suggests that the visiting team will delay until the morning of the initial match to determine whether Perth Stadium conditions favor a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spinner.
Both pace bowlers are part of the 12-man squad, indicating there are no doubts about their fast bowler's fitness.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the bowling group, with the latter expected to be omitted if Bashir makes the final team.
Pitch Factors Lean Toward Pace Bowlers
The England coach had been expected to choose an pace-only lineup on a ground that has staged five previous Tests.
During these games, 134 wickets have fallen to seamers, with only 40 to spin bowling.
Among these 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has claimed 29, while all visiting spinners together have just a handful.
At a venue known for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, stated that these traits are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team relying on seamers remains the probable decision.
Spin Options Weighed
There had been rumors that the all-rounder could be brought into the team to offer some slow bowling while also strengthening the batting lineup.
But the coach has opted to keep faith with the young spinner, having said previously that he would be his first-choice spinner for the Ashes.
Earlier, Nathan Lyon described the English spinner as “decent,” saying that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still the English best spinner.”
“It is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for people who haven’t done it in the previous in these conditions,” Lyon remarked of spin bowling in matches Down Under.
“I’m not going to let my secrets out so they perform and perform well out here.”
